GFCI Outlet Requirements for New York Homeowners

By Nate Boehm, Master Electrician ยท License #Elec-3842

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are one of the most important safety features in any home. They cut power in milliseconds when a current imbalance is detected โ€” the kind of imbalance that happens when electricity is flowing through a person. New York State has specific requirements for where they must be installed, and failing an inspection for missing GFCIs is one of the most common code violations we see in Monroe County.

Where GFCI Protection Is Required in New York Homes

New York State follows the National Electrical Code (NEC), which requires GFCI protection in the following locations:

BathroomsAll outlets within 6 feet of a sink or water source. Required on all bathroom circuits.
KitchensAll countertop outlets. Required within 6 feet of a sink. Applies to kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, and dining room countertops.
GaragesAll outlets in attached and detached garages, including unfinished areas.
OutdoorsAll outdoor outlets โ€” front, back, and sides of the home โ€” must have weatherproof GFCI protection.
Crawl SpacesAll outlets at or below grade level in unfinished crawl spaces.
Unfinished BasementsRequired in unfinished basements. Not required in finished basement areas, but recommended.
BoathousesAll outlets inside boathouses.
Hot Tubs & PoolsAll outlets within 20 feet of a pool or hot tub water edge. Specific requirements vary by installation type.

Older Homes: Do You Need to Upgrade?

GFCI requirements have been updated multiple times since 1971 when they were first introduced for bathrooms. If your home was built before the mid-1990s, there's a good chance it doesn't meet current GFCI standards โ€” especially in the kitchen.

You're not legally required to upgrade existing wiring in an older home unless you're doing a renovation or the property is being sold with a required inspection. However, the safety upgrade cost is low and the protection is significant.

GFCI at Inspection Time

If you're selling a home in Monroe County, your inspector will check for GFCI compliance. Missing GFCI protection is one of the top items flagged during real estate inspections. It's also required when pulling permits for kitchen or bathroom renovations.

AFCI vs. GFCI: What's the Difference?

GFCI protects against ground faults (current through people or water). AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) protects against arc faults (dangerous sparking inside walls). Both are required in specific areas โ€” AFCI in bedrooms, living rooms, and most habitable rooms; GFCI in wet areas. They're different protections and you need both where specified.
